Ebay 2014: the Aftermath

Two weeks ago, I wound up selling a bunch of stuff on ebay.  So, with another round of auctions ended, and I have to say that I’m pleased with the outcome. Before I interject some possible reasons for it, I’d rather look at the facts to start with.

First I wound up selling only my leftover IG that I was willing to part with and a couple of auctions for leftover inquisitors and flagellants that I had in my IG bin. In total, there were 66 auctions (well, it started at 67, but someone quickly pointed out a duplicate, which I then cancelled).

I didn’t do any research originally into the MSRP of the models before hand, so I had no idea what to expect. As always, my goal is to hit between 40-60% of MSRP in my final total, but I’m not sure where I landed. What I do know is the dollars and sense that ebay/paypal spit out to me:

Auction Totals $1734.44
Shipping Fees Collected $237.95
USPS Costs -$196.43
Ebay Listing Fees -$36.10
Ebay Final Value Fees -$199.03
Paypal Fees -$68.59
Final Value: $1472.24

The Numbers:

EbayBurstWithout doing the numbers in advance, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was hoping for about $1,000. I know that back in the day I’d tally’d up the MSRP on the lot at somewhere north of $7,000, but I also know that I’d traded and sold a bunch of stuff over the years, so I had no idea what was left. I also wound up selling over $500 to local players in the week leading up to it, so really, I wasn’t counting on anything.

One thing that I found interesting on the numbers is just how close I came to getting the shipping costs right. Of course, that’s not real, since fees are taken out of the shipping costs as well from both EBay (10.1%) and Paypal (3.4%), and I was fortunate to have some extra shipping supplies on hand from my mom’s adventures in online scrapbooking supplies, as well as some extra from previous auctions. So, if I actually assume there’s something like $50 in packing materials and cut out the ebay fees, the actual shipping costs are more like $279.94.

Drat. I missed again.

Another thing I found interesting is that every bidder paid within two days of the auction—with only one exception. In fact, after 24 hours, I only had five people left to pay. The other winds up going in the “deadbeat” column and I’ll eventually try to recover the costs (or better yet, sell to the next highest bidder). I haven’t had much luck with second chance offers though, so we’ll see.

Tracking:

One thing I haven’t done much of in the past is tracking my auctions progress over the week. I watch them constantly throughout the week, but I decided that this week I was going to keep daily track of auction totals as the week went on to see if there was any consistency of how auctions were affected by the total number of bidders, watchers, and if there was any correlation in last minute bumps.

I have all of that information saved on my computer, but it’ll probably take a while for me to format it and try to figure out what it means. Granted, it’s also just one auctions worth of data points, but if I find it interesting, maybe I’ll do it again in the future.

Ok, so I broke down and did the numbers, and here they are:

Some caveats here before I really do the numbers:

  1. Prices are listed at current MSRP, though none of these figures were purchased at that price (most weren’t purchased at all, and were instead traded for)
  2. For models not currently available, I listed the closest MSRP I could find on GW’s website (Example: Commissar Gaunt can’t be purchased solo, so I priced him as I would a normal commissar)

Normally, I strive to get in the realm of 40-60% of retail value for my auctions, and these came back at 73.2% (on average)–which is on the high end after you figure in Ebay/Paypal fees–almost exactly 60% MSRP.  I certainly can’t complain about that

Let’s take a look at the outliers to see where I can improve in the future.  First, let’s look at those that didn’t do exceptionally well (any auctions that went for less than 40% of MSRP):

  • wh39kAuction2 (2)4x Assembled/Painted Heavy Weapons – 30.38%
  • 3x Assembled Heavy Weapon Teams (bolters) – 31.65%
  • 1x Painted Hellhound – 33.33%
  • 1x Leman Russ (dusty) – 36.36%
  • 4x IG w/ Vox casters – 36.64%
  • 2x Tank Commanders – 37.5%
  • 3x Assembled Heavy Weapons (mortars) – 37.97%
  • 3x Assembled Heavy Weapons (mortars) – 38.25%

Realistically, I don’t find any of those to be surprising.  I would generally gague that assembled/painted models tend to sell for less than those that aren’t.  Half of those lots include heavy weapons teams that largely fit that description, and none of them have what I would consider the “good” weapon options.  Of the other auctions, there’s a sub-optimal lot (who needs four vox models), one with poor comparisons (2nd Edition metal guy poking out of a tank is not the same as Commander Pask), and two tanks that weren’t in great condition.  Actually, the only thing that I think I can take away from this (aside from a general feeling of the overall prices these go for) is that that for particularly dusty models, it would behoove me to wipe them down before posting them.  Seriously, the only thing wrong with that Russ is that it was dusty.  The rest of the russes sold for between 62-73% of MSRP.

On the higher side (I’d say anything that sold for 80% or more of retail value–since 20% discount on GW isn’t hard to get elsewhere), we have:

Rare / OOP Models:

  • wh39kIGAuctions (2)1x Female Commissar – 80.57%
  • 1x Chimera w/ Forgeworld parts – 83.22%
  • 9x Kasrkin – 94.74%
  • 2x Cadian “At Ease” models – 99.9%
  • 1x Female Commissar – 135.06%
  • 10x Kasrkin – 146.88%
  • 3x Kasrkin w/ Melta – 186.00%
  • 1x INQ Giddeon Lorr – 262.5%

Again, this shouldn’t be surprising.  Older models that are hard to get are more valuable.  Of course, the caveats are that they still need to be at least fairly good in game, or at least be really cool to look at.  Those that are both, tend to sell incredibly well.  The Kasrkin are a good example of this.  The only other two weird things to note here are that of the two female commissars, the one without a base sold for $10 less than the one with one.  That could just be a fluke coincidence, or the base might actually have some effect on it–they’re cheap enough that I’ll throw one in next time.

Otherwise, Giddeon Lorr also looks like an outstanding sale, but he’s really in about the right ballpark.  Some have sold for as much as $65 in thee recent past, but $40 is about right.  The problem here is the baseline I used for comparison was another witchunter that sells for about $16.

Finecast Backlash:

  • wh39kIGAuctions (1)1x Iron Hand Straken – 80.60%
  • 5x Ratlings – 87.5%
  • 5x Ratlings – 87.5%
  • 5x Ratlings – 91.5%
  • 1x Witch Hunter INQ – 136.67%
  • 1x Commissar Yarrick – 161.04%

This category isn’t one that holds universally true, so it’s hard to say if there is much value to a finecast backlash.  I sold other models that are also only available in finecast, but they didn’t come up with the same sort of value that these did.  Honestly, I’m not sure why these faired so well, unless it’s a combination of cool models, poor materials, and good rules?

Good in the Game:

  • 3x Cadian w/ Meltaguns – 91.11%
  • 3x Cadian Meltaguns – 120.04%
  • 3x Cadian Plasmaguns – 135.06%

This is a no-brainer.  People want special weapons.  I attribute these to the idea that if you’re going to pay GW direct for them, you might as well try to get even a minor discount online.  For the pure melta/plasma auctions, GW requires you to buy one of each at a time, so naturally it’ll be more tempting for people to buy just the type they want.

Paint Job?

  • 1x Female Inquisitor – 96.88%

This might also get thrown in with the metal models, or the hard to find ones.  I’m not exactly sure.

No Idea:

  • IMG_2435 (Medium)1x Thunderer Siege Tank (not forgeworld) – 83.81%
  • 2x Cadian Snipers – 84.07%
  • 1x Lord Commissar – 86.79%
  • 2x Cadian Officers – 120.1%
  • 2x Cadian Officers – 126.1%
  • 1x Metal Command Squad – 186%
  • 1x Bits Bag – 260%
  • 1x Sanctioned Psker – 290%

Ok, this one is all over the map.  I’ve sorted them by the categories that I feel are the driving forces for them to go so high.  Granted, there is some bleedover between categories (for instance, Yarrick is both no longer available in metal–and is out of stock in finecast–and fantastic in the game).  Those in the “No idea” section I have some idea, but I’m not sure how accurate it is.  I mean, many of those are no longer available, but is there a need for metal cadian officers/command squads?  Can’t you make everything out of the plastic unit?  The biggest head scratcher though?  The sanctioned psyker, wherein someone paid about the same price for that model as the MSRP for three of them direct from GW.  One really never knows.

The lessons to be learned here are that people pay quite a bit for older/rare models, for those that are good in the game, and really seem to dislike finecast still.  Furthermore, there’s always a few auctions that really leave me wondering.

Final Thoughts:

Somehow this seemed to be my most profitable sale to date.  I’m chalking that up to the following:

  1. The codex had been released recently and proved to be quite good
  2. GW’s making more and more of their models direct only (so you can’t get a 20% discount on many of them) and their continued use of finecast

Another thing that made this a pleasant experience was that everyone paid quickly.  I think that’s a fluke really, as I’ve done nothing that I consider would have any effect on the speed to which people would pay.  And sorting through the lots to figure out who got what wasn’t all that painful.  This is because I took time to prep things in advance, and so many people had paid at the same time, so I was able to lay them all out before packing them up.  Those are two things that I plan on doing again in the future.

Anywho, I know most people aren’t terribly interested in this sort of thing, but I like to have it documented for my records.  Additionally, I think prospective ebay sellers can garner quite a bit of info from these posts: how much you can expect to make, where you can help improve your process, etc.  At least, that’s what I’m hoping to learn from documenting this…
