Ok, that’s completely an inappropriate opening to a blog post (unless the blog post concerns ships and ceiling wax), but it popped into my head so I went with it. The thought that it had been a long time since I’d purchased another army was what I was thinking about it, and apparently, the time has come to put that lull to an end. So, I present to you, my new Ork army.
Jeff, our resident brain-child (and Bieber look-alike) will be moving out of state soon to attend college, and he was looking to thin down his toys in the meantime. So, he posted this army for sale in the local forum to see if anyone was interested. Much to my surprise, nobody seemed to be at all. I’m not sure if that’s because this is Orks and people just don’t care for greenskins, or the economical downturn, or perhaps the fact that GW is releasing new armies at a frenetic pace that people just dont’ have much in the way of disposable income. Whatever the case, he didn’t seem to be getting any bites (at least publically).
It was at that point that I threw my hat in the ring. I told Jeff that I had absolutely no interest in Orks but, if the price was right, I would always be willing to buy. Granted, my reputation in the area as a bit of a cheapskate is fairly well known (to Jeff for sure, as he’s picked up one army directly off me, and I brokered another for a friend out of Seattle). Ironically, this very same army was contained in the massive lot of Orks I wound up buying off Jeff.
Anywho, I gave Jeff an offer in traditional fashion: warning him that I didn’t want them and that I was clearly lowballing him, but he indicated that he didn’t particularly need the cash, and that he seemed to like me (for some strange reason) so we made the deal.
Mental Note: Must do something nice for Jeff in the future. He’s a good chap.
So, after a couple of weeks of random & light email traffic, we finally settled on a price. One trip to an ATM, and another to the local weekly gaming group, and now the following plastic “men” are in my possession:
The retail price here is misleading though. A great deal of the ork boyz (pushing 100 of them) are from the Assault on Black Reach boxed set. Likewise, all of the deffkoptas and virtually all of the Nobz are from the ame. That means they have a limited number of poses and originally came at far lower cost than buying them via normal retail prices. Unfortunately though, those boxed sets are out of print, so I don’t know how to realistically compare the values of those models to the “real” versions of the same.
Perhaps the right answer is to say that the cost to replace (with new) is what’s listed in retail, so that drives up the value. It doesn’t seem remotely realistic that someone would value the 14 deffkoptas (most of which have broken blades) would be worth $450+ alone though.
Whatever they’re valued at, this army was certainly in the “too good of a deal to pass up” category. So, now I’m the owner of yet more plastic crack sitting in a box at my house. Any idea when the Ork codex is due to be released?
